The Ultimate Romantic Valentine’s Weekend Getaway Plan

Friday evening: Arrive in San Miguel de Allende. Check in to your hotel and enjoy a relaxing dinner to unwind and unplug from the distractions at home and focus on creating some sparks!

Some romantic hotel options:

-La Casa de Rosario: While easier on the budget, this hotel is very comfortable and near the center of the city. Rates for two people begin at about $100 USD a night. Rates include a full breakfast. www.casaderosario.com , Hidalgo No. 41, Centro, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico.

-La Puertecita Boutique Hotel: This boutique hotel boasts a great restaurant (inside and terrace seating), quiet hacienda setting, and lovely rooms. Price ranges from $200-300 USD a night. Check out www.lapuertecita.com, Calle Santo Domingo 75, Zona Centro, 37740 San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico.

-Hotel Matilda: Modern luxury define this hotel. Its deluxe suites begin at $245 USD a night, but also offer romantic packages that have all the perks and special attention that can be requested. Breakfast is also included in the price. www.hotelmatilda.com , Aldama 53, Centro, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico. Saturday morning:
For early risers: Try a sunrise hot air balloon ride! Semi-private rides (4-10 passengers) begin at around $2200 pesos (around $200 USD), exclusive rides for 2 are available for $8000 pesos (around $750 USD). Post-flight breakfast at Hotel Rosewood is offered for $250 pesos (approximately $20 USD) pesos per person.
For those who prefer to sleep in, start your day of romance and relaxation with a pleasant breakfast at the Mexiquito Garden Hotel.
Then whisk your date away to one of the area’s hot springs! I love La Gruta Hot Springs, Restaurant, and Spa as the romantic option. About 20 minutes outside of town (you will need the taxi!) its warm pools are nestled between natural rock walls and landscaping, making it feel more private and secluded. Take your time and enjoy the company, try the spa treatments, and relish in an unhurried lunch. Entrance tickets start at approximately $10 USD ($120 pesos)

Saturday afternoon:
Relaxed? Have your taxi pick you up and head back to the hotel to rest a bit, and then dress up for a night on the town!
A reminder for the ladies, try to avoid heels. They look great, but with San Miguel’s cobble stone streets, natural stone sidewalks, and hills, you will thank me later for packing some cute flats or strappy sandals instead. Also, nights will be cool, so pack a warm shawl!
Have dinner al fresco at Hecho en Mexico (they have great coconut shrimp!) at one of their heated patio tables. The atmosphere is warm and comfortable while still feeling classy. Or, for a livelier setting, try out Mama Mia’s, with excellent food, live music, and dancing.

After eating your fill and lingering a while with your date, let the city work its magic. Stroll through the streets of San Miguel in the direction of the Jardin Principal (main plaza), where you can enjoy the lights and sounds of the city. Often, there are mariachi bands playing around the plaza. Take advantage of the occasion and request a serenade dedicated to your date.
If you wish, have dessert in one of the little coffee shops around the plaza, and then take a taxi ride to the mirador (lookout) and experience the full view of the city nightscape. It will be chilly, but take the time to snuggle and dream before heading back to the hotel… I will let you decide how to finish the evening!

Sunday morning:
Sleep in a little! Have breakfast either at your hotel, the previous mentioned options, or try exploring around downtown and find a place for coffee and pastries (there are several around and most of them very good).
Enjoy some of the shops and galleries as you walk, also check out the artisans market in late morning (Plaza Lanatón, Andador Lucas Balderas, Zona Centro, 37700 San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico). Choose a gift for each other or something together to remember your time away.
Before leaving town, make note of the places and things you would like to do and start planning your return!

So there you have it, the perfect combination of great dates, great food, great location, and that one special person! Woo away!
